In today’s episode, George Lucas says that Obi-Wan is the literal reason the republic fell, along with Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the dark side and becoming Darth Vader. This is cited from Paul Duncan’s Star Wars Archives book.

  1. It was part Obi-Wan's fault and Palpatine. Remember how he was manipulating everything. Telling the counsel that Anakin isn't ready but telling Anakin that the counsel doesn't trust him or believes in his abilities.

  2. Totally disagree. Obi Wan wasn’t the perfect teacher but it was Yoda, Mace, and the Council who caused the death of the republic by not sensing Palpatines plans and not supporting Obi Wan and Anakin better. Especially in the Clone Wars series, Obi Wan was always there for Anakin and saved the republic in many ways.

  3. It's so true. When you look at the stories that George created and wrote, as well as developing the cutting edge special effects, there is so much substance in the stories and movies. Unfortunately, so many "fans" the only thing that they see, is Ewoks, and jar jar. And such silliness. Like the word midiclorians. Or, just flat out meaning less nonsense. However, as the real fans do know the depth that these movies, books, shows, comics, really have. As far as the Disney owned stories, I do really like a lot of it. There is really a lot of real quality products. Not everything, but still a lot. Now, put that thought on hold for a minute. For all the people that don't like it at all. Let me say this. All the crap that George had been said to him, about the silliest things. People were bashing George, Jake Lloyd, Amahd Best, and so on. These people led George to sell off the franchise. It wasn't fun for him to hear, and read, all the crazy things that people were attacking about everything. So, he sold it. Now, all these fans are crying they're eyes out. Begging for George to get the franchise back. These are the people that have nobody to blame, but themselves. That's the truth.

  4. “Obi wan’s inability to train Anakin properly” is such a wild line. Like WHAT? Obi wan is the only reason Anakin didn’t turn into Darth Vader much sooner.

  5. Kinda harsh interpretation. Cannot put it all on Obi-Wan.
The council could have just denied it and kicked Kenobi out. Or could have assigned a more experienced Jedi to train Anakin.
Also many other things Anakin did just under the council's nose and they did not sense it. Only Windu felt it.
I guess the council failed to see what Anakin was doing due to not having that mindset. Many times it is not about naivety when not seeing the doing of malevolent people, but just the way of thinking. A good being has a different way of thinking than a bad one and their mind is not wired to think in croocked ways.
As Frank Abignale said, the famous forger turned FBI agent, he is so effective as an FBI agent because he was a criminal, as he has that perspective and mindset.

  6. its definitely not obi wans fault anakin lost his shit and killed everyone lol. thats just ridiculous to blame him, maybe he wasnt ready, but that wasnt his fault.

  7. Not accurate. The Dark Side of the Force is addictive. Once you get a taste of the power, ie "You have no idea the power of the Dark Side." Could Obi-Wan have stopped Palpatine's plan? Let's say yes, if he had been a genius, if he had realized events were being manipulated. But that blame goes a long way. The Entire Jedi Council, Padme, no one saw the obvious. But Anakin grew up in slavery, he might have joined the Dark Side anyway.

  8. Kathleen and Disney turned Star Wars into a bad woke joke. It was like, oh lets make these characters gay for no reason that does not even play into the story, or these ones feminists who know better than you just because they are feminists etc etc. Lets make all the original characters look like morons and even our droids are better blah blah. I hope George decides to say "episodes 7-9 never even happened and we will be completely remaking them with new writers. Just cut and paste some of the Disney footage and re-shoot some of the other stuff to make a worthy 7-9. Sure you can keep the same actors just redo the dialogue and around 1/3rd of the scenes.

  9. Gotta remember that when Obi wan promised qui gon to take Anakin under his care , obi wan was still officially a padawan. Isn't that mind blowing!?

  10. If Lucas meant for Obi-Wan to be the primary reason the Republic fell, it didn’t translate well in the prequels. While Obi-Wan might have been a parent or sibling figure in denial of who his protégé was, out of loyalty to his old Master and Anakin, both Yoda and Windu knew there was something wrong with Anakin. Yet they kept Anakin because of his immense power and their arrogance in thinking they could control him. The blame lays at the feet of the Jedi Council, specifically its two top members. That and the fact that Palpatine was a superior adversary and out played them all.

  11. Hubris is to blame, pure and simple. You can't blame one single person for the fall of the Republic. That's just silly. Might as well blame Qui-Gon then, for making Obi-Wan promise to train the boy.

  12. I have to disagree. It is unfair that to only blame Obi Wan. The whole Jedi council was there, Anakin had big feelings and he couldn't handle them and he even seeked Yoda's help and that was a disaster! I think if it was anyone's fault, it was the emperor's, Darth Maul, the Jedi council and specifically Qui-gon's and Anakin himself! Qui Gon made Obi wan promise, Obi Wan was just thrown into this and he had to uphold his promise to his dying master and father figure. Obi Wan did everything he knew and could with what he knew to train and teach Anakin. If he had known better, he would have done better. At least that's my conclusion.

  13. Sadly it isn't "storytelling without a point anymore", it's social engineering through the social justice lense/flavor of the week dressed up as storytelling… storytelling is dead.

But maybe that's OK, seeing as we're on the verge of ww3, nuclear Armageddon, governments on the verge of total collapse, maybe soon humanity will be reduced to gathering around a fire at night and listening to true storytelling from bards and skalds like our ancient ancestors.

  14. Dude, I don't know why I am so upset, but I don't like this… Obi Wan was THE perfect jedi. Anakin was destined to do what happened. Obi Wan was the perfect instrument.

  15. if obiwan spent less time getting high on midichlorians and laser dancing and constantly changing his name and doing shady shit, maybe he couldve been a better father figure to anakin and stopped anakin from cutting his own legs off in a botched laser dancing flip that he knew he couldnt make.

  16. Well, Qui Gon should of listened to Obi One, and not picked up little Ani, and Qui Gon shouldn't of given his last instruction to Obi to train the boy. 🤔

  17. This was an already obvious thing in the original trilogy. They even removed a statement by Obi-Wan from ROTJ where Obi-Wan was to tell Luke, “My mistake has had dire consequences for the galaxy.”

  18. I couldn’t disagree with this more. Even in the story Yoda believes the fall of the order is his fault. And Obi-Wan would not have trained him if Qui Gon had not forced him to on his deathbed. I really hate all this retconning over how bad the Jedi were and hate-mongering over Disney and Star Wars and how great a story teller Lucas was when we all know what his work looks like when he doesn’t have good guidance and collaboration. When we grew up The Jedi were victims of Palpatine who had HIS OWN PLANS for bringing down the Republic and the Order that had nothing to do with Obi-Wan training Anakin. Anakin just became part of a plan he didn’t recognize and made the wrong choices with HIS OWN AGENCY consistently. There was a sense of inevitability in Anakin’s and the Order’s fate though. The Clone Wars shows us that through a much less flawed Anakin at Mortis.

  19. If Obi Wan had killed Vader the Emperor would not have had an apprentice powerful enough to hunt down and kill the remaining Jedi. It’s possible the Jedi could have regrouped and taken on the emperor in an alternate timeline. Yoda did a decent job by himself battling Palpatine so imagine of Yoda, Obi Wan and a few other Jedi could have had a second crack and killing him. But that would just mean we wouldn’t of had A New Hope.
