I always wonder why instead of reading comments like, "Xiumin killed this," I often see comments that say, "Xuimin is so underrated." Why? It's the fans who isolate him and fail to acknowledge his talent.
It's not my first time reading comments that slyly belittle Kim Minseok's talent. The recent one had, "Baekhyun and Chen--vocal kings, Xiumin—cool voice of a fairy dancer." Wow so Kim Minseok is not a vocal king? First of all– EXO are vocal kings. Kim Minseok is EXO. Ergo, Kim Minseok is also a vocal king. He's not just some dancer.
His voice may not have a thick vocal timbre as the main vocalists Jongdae and Baekhyun but his vocal tone is clear and smooth. And his vocal technique is amazing y'all muggles can't understand. Great vocals are not just measured by how much a singer can belt high notes, it is with the amount of technique a vocalist have.
Let's talk about why Kim Minseok deserves the title Vocal King. 1) Lead vocalist. He's given the lines wherein he has to dance with wiggly choreography… in many choreographies, you can see him dance across the stage and still deliver his lines smoothly. Two of his smoothest perfomances are his graceful solo choreography of "Don't Go" singing with clear vocals and that "ahooo" blah blah at the end of "Oh La la la."
2.) Back-up vocals. Kim Minseok's vocal ability is so versatile that his voice (together with other members) is often used to harmonize with the main vocalists. If you listen carefully, you can isolate voices as to who's who is singing the harmony. There's a video of LDN noise (one of EXO's producer/sound editor) on how they mix their their voices. If you've been watching his fancams, you'll know he oftens sings while the main vocalists are singing and that's on live stages while dancing. Who does that, right? EXO, right? On the technical side, one needs immense control to be able to harmonize well and not outshadow the melody sang by the main vocalists.
3.) Rapper. Even classical musicians praised his rapping technique because he does it in a measured way that he's rapping like he's almost singing.
"We are one," my foot. There are lot of fans who deliberately shade Minseok's talent. He's not even my ultimate bias but I acknowledge this man's immense talent, hardwork, and passion.
